What to Expect from CAPS Grade 3 Mathematics

Grade 3 Mathematics marks the culmination of the Foundation Phase and the platform for everything that follows. By the end of Grade 3, learners should be fluent with numbers to 1 000, confident with all four operations, and developing a solid understanding of fractions, measurement, and geometry. EdSoft's adaptive module ensures every learner finishes Foundation Phase with the mathematical foundation they need.

Numbers, Operations, and Relationships

Grade 3 is the year all four operations come together. Learners build fluency in addition and subtraction with three-digit numbers, develop multiplication skills for tables up to 10×10, and work with division as both sharing and grouping. Mental calculation strategies — using number bonds, doubling, halving, and place value — are developed alongside written methods. Fractions are introduced: learners explore halves, thirds, and quarters in both symbolic and practical contexts.

Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

Number patterns extend to larger sequences, and learners identify and describe the rule that governs increasing and decreasing patterns. Input-output relationships develop toward a more explicit understanding of function machines.

Space and Shape (Geometry)

Grade 3 geometry consolidates recognition and description of 2D and 3D shapes and introduces more formal language around properties — sides, vertices, edges, and faces. Symmetry, tiling, and tessellation are explored practically.

Measurement

By Grade 3 learners use standard measurement units confidently — measuring length, mass, and capacity, telling time to the minute, calculating elapsed time, and working with South African money including making change.

Data Handling

Learners collect and organise their own data, represent it in a variety of graphs, and interpret results — drawing simple conclusions and comparing datasets.

How EdSoft Supports CAPS Grade 3 Mathematics

EdSoft's CAPS Grade 3 module uses adaptive learning to ensure every learner finishes the Foundation Phase with genuine mathematical confidence. The platform tracks individual performance across all content areas, providing targeted support where needed and appropriately paced challenge for every learner. Works fully offline.
