What to Expect from CAPS Grade 4 Mathematics

Grade 4 marks the move from Foundation to Intermediate Phase — a significant mathematical step up. Number ranges expand dramatically, formal written algorithms are introduced, and new topics like common fractions, decimal fractions, and data analysis challenge learners to think more abstractly. EdSoft's adaptive module supports every learner through this important transition.

Numbers, Operations, and Relationships

Grade 4 learners work with whole numbers up to 10 000, developing place value understanding, rounding, and the four operations in written form. Long multiplication and long division are introduced with understanding — not just as procedures, but as processes grounded in place value. Common fractions are explored systematically, and decimal fractions make their first formal appearance. Properties of numbers — factors, multiples, prime numbers, and square numbers — become important topics.

EdSoft's step-by-step animated guidance breaks complex written algorithms into clear stages, with instant feedback identifying exactly where errors are occurring in multi-step calculations.

Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

Grade 4 introduces geometric patterns alongside number patterns, and learners begin to work with variables in simple equations — solving for unknown values in addition and subtraction contexts.

Space and Shape (Geometry)

The properties of 2D shapes and 3D objects are explored more formally, including angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, and the construction of geometric figures. Symmetry and transformations are developed further.

Measurement

Learners use standard units formally for all measurement topics — including area and perimeter of regular shapes. Temperature is introduced as a new measurement concept.

Data Handling

Grade 4 introduces mode, median, and range — the first formal statistical measures — alongside expanded work with a variety of graphs including bar graphs and pie charts.
