What to Expect from CAPS Grade 5 Mathematics
Grade 5 Mathematics consolidates and extends the Intermediate Phase foundations — pushing number ranges further, introducing percentages and more complex fraction work, and developing stronger spatial and statistical thinking. EdSoft's adaptive module ensures every learner keeps building on a genuinely solid foundation.
Numbers, Operations, and Relationships
Grade 5 learners work with whole numbers up to 999 999 and develop confident written calculation methods for all four operations. Fraction work deepens significantly — learners add, subtract, and compare common fractions with different denominators and convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers. Decimal fractions extend to hundredths, and percentages are introduced as a third way of expressing parts of a whole. The relationships between fractions, decimals, and percentages become an important focus.
Patterns, Functions, and Algebra
Number and geometric patterns are explored at greater depth, and algebraic thinking develops through input-output tables with more complex rules. Simple linear equations are solved with growing confidence.
Space and Shape (Geometry)
Grade 5 geometry develops classification of triangles and quadrilaterals by properties, and the properties of circles are introduced. Construction of geometric figures using a compass and protractor begins.
Measurement
Learners work with area and perimeter of rectangles and triangles, develop volume concepts, and convert between units of measurement — building the measurement fluency the curriculum requires.
Data Handling
Grade 5 data work introduces frequency tables and a broader range of graphs, and learners calculate mean alongside mode and median — developing a more comprehensive statistical toolkit.
How EdSoft Supports CAPS Grade 5 Mathematics
EdSoft's adaptive module builds Grade 5 mathematical skills through fast, targeted interactive exercises that respond to each learner individually — detecting where understanding is secure and where more support is needed. Real-time tracking for teachers and parents. Fully offline.
