Grade 5 life science explores plant and animal reproduction, the life cycles of organisms, and the concept of adaptation — how living things are suited to their environments. Biodiversity and conservation are introduced as important scientific and social themes.

Matter and Materials

Grade 5 matter work explores the states of matter — solid, liquid, and gas — and physical and chemical changes. Learners investigate the water cycle as a real-world example of matter changing state, and explore acids and bases through practical investigations.

Energy and Change

Grade 5 energy work extends to heat transfer — conduction, convection, and radiation are explored through experiments and real-world examples. Sound is investigated more formally, including how it travels through different media.

Earth and Beyond

Learners explore the Earth's structure — crust, mantle, and core — and investigate how rocks and minerals are formed. Weathering and erosion are studied through their effects on the landscape.
