What to Expect from CAPS Grade 7 Mathematics

Grade 7 is the gateway to Senior Phase mathematics — a year where abstract thinking becomes central and algebraic reasoning takes centre stage. Learners encounter rational numbers, exponents, and a significantly more formal approach to algebra and geometry. Numbers, Operations, and Relationships

Grade 7 learners work formally with all types of rational numbers — integers, fractions, and decimals in positive and negative forms — and develop fluency with operations across all of them. Exponents are introduced, and scientific notation makes its first appearance. Financial mathematics becomes more sophisticated: learners calculate interest, tax, hire purchase, and exchange rates in real-world contexts.

Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

Algebra takes centre stage in Grade 7. Learners develop fluency with algebraic language — identifying variables, constants, and coefficients — and manipulate algebraic expressions through addition, subtraction, and simple multiplication. Linear equations and inequalities are solved, and learners begin to work with algebraic graphs.

Space and Shape (Geometry)

Grade 7 geometry develops formal understanding of geometric relationships — the properties of triangles, the conditions for congruence, and the Pythagorean theorem are all introduced. Construction skills with compass and protractor are extended.

Measurement

Area and perimeter of composite figures, surface area and volume of prisms, and unit conversions between metric units develop measurement fluency.

Data Handling

Grade 7 data work introduces the concept of probability alongside extended statistical analysis — learners interpret complex graphs, calculate all measures of central tendency, and make predictions based on data.
