What to Expect from CAPS Grade 7 Social Sciences

Grade 7 marks the beginning of the Senior Phase, and Social Sciences takes on greater depth and critical engagement. Historical and geographical content becomes more analytically demanding, and learners begin to develop the evaluative thinking that Senior Phase study requires. History

Grade 7 History explores European colonisation of Africa — the motivations for colonisation, the methods used to establish and maintain colonial control, and the experiences of colonised peoples. The mineral revolution in South Africa — the discovery of diamonds and gold and its transformative effects — is studied in depth.

Geography

Grade 7 Geography develops more sophisticated spatial analysis — investigating how South Africa's physical features (climate, vegetation, soils, rivers) relate to human activity and economic development. Map work becomes more complex, and learners analyse geographical data using a range of tools and techniques.
