What to Expect from CAPS Grade 8 Social Sciences

Grade 8 Social Sciences develops more sophisticated critical historical and geographical analysis — moving through the late 19th and early 20th centuries and exploring increasingly complex geographical concepts. History

Grade 8 History covers the period from imperialism through to the First World War and its aftermath. Learners study how competition for empire contributed to global conflict, how the war was fought and experienced by different peoples, and how the post-war settlement shaped the 20th century. Source analysis skills are developed through primary documents, photographs, and propaganda materials.

Geography

Grade 8 Geography explores population dynamics — distribution, density, migration, and urbanisation — and settlement geography. South African urbanisation and its historical, economic, and social dimensions are analysed. Map work develops to include topographic maps and more complex spatial analysis.
