What to Expect from CAPS Grade 8 Technology

Grade 8 Technology extends technical knowledge into electrical and electronic systems — developing more sophisticated design and construction skills alongside the investigative and evaluative thinking that the CAPS design process demands. Electrical Systems and Control

Grade 8 learners investigate electrical circuits — series and parallel connections, switches, sensors, and simple control systems. Learners design and build circuits that respond to input conditions, developing an understanding of how electrical control systems work.

Structures

Grade 8 structures work develops suspension and reinforced frameworks — learners investigate how bridges and other large structures manage compression and tension forces, and apply this understanding in design projects.

Mechanical Systems and Control

Gears, pulleys, and belt-drive systems are explored — learners investigate how these mechanisms change speed, direction, and mechanical advantage, and design systems that achieve specified outputs.

Processing

Grade 8 processing explores more complex material modification processes — heat treatment of metals, chemical processing of food, and industrial manufacturing processes are investigated.
