What to Expect from CAPS Grade 9 Mathematics

Grade 9 is the final year of the Senior Phase and one of the most mathematically important years in a learner's school career. It consolidates everything built since Grade 7, pushes algebraic manipulation further, and prepares learners for the significant step up to FET Mathematics in Grade 10. Grade 9 completes the rational number system — learners work confidently across all rational number types including surds, and apply financial mathematics with full sophistication: compound interest, depreciation, and time value of money calculations.

Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

Algebraic manipulation reaches Senior Phase peak complexity in Grade 9. Learners factorise quadratic expressions, solve quadratic equations, and work with algebraic fractions. Functions — linear, quadratic, and inverse proportion — are graphed and interpreted. Learners begin to understand the relationship between an algebraic equation and its graph, building the function literacy that Grade 10 demands.
